Hello and Welcome!

My name is Viacheslav Guk. I am a Petroleum Engineer with a Ph.D. degree based in Calgary.

My professional passion is to make our business more efficient and sustainable through maximizing hydrocarbon production and recovery and minimizing cost.

During my professional journey I had an opportunity to work with various operators by size and ownership structure, and I have encountered numerous poor practices, making business unsuccessful: excessive drilling, suboptimal fracture treatments, and wells producing far below their potential.

The reasons for such practices vary, but mitigation solutions invariably include routine engineering calculations and systematic performance-based management approach.

Within my professional practice I rely on engineering calculations and expertise as opposite to “beliefs”, “feelings”, or “experience”. Years of experience are valuable in our profession as long as they were used to develop expertise through routine (and at times hard) calculations and practicing.

The philosophy and approaches that I adhere to within my professional practice were inspired by work with my respected senior colleagues and teachers: Mr. Joe Mach, Dr. Don Wolcott, Prof. Michael Economides, and Dr. Mars Khasanov. I am indebted to them for lessons, ideas, advices and interesting and fruitful discussions about Engineering and Life.
